Termed as mini polls, or the election before the election, DP Ruto’s United Democratic Alliance (UDA) today conducted party primaries in 36 out of 47 counties in Kenya. In an exercise which must be lauded as a shot in the arm of Kenya’s democracy, only seven constituencies had the exercise postponed to later dates. 5 out of 7, slightly more than 71 percent of constituencies to have UDA nominations postponed are in mulembe.
Constituencies to have UDA nominations postponed
| Constituencies to have UDA nominations postponed | Date when UDA nominations will be held |
|---|---|
| Bumula*, Turkana Central, Turkana East | 19th April 2022 |
| Mt. Elgon*, Malava*, Likuyani*, Lugari* | 15th April 2022 |
While postponement in some areas, notably in four poling stations of 582 in Bomet county, has been explained by the UDA elections board as being brought about by destruction of voting materials the situation in mulembe remains unexplained.
While Deputy President mentioned “minor logistical challenges” in his tweet lauding the exercise, we want to believe that Western Kenya is fairly well served by road and air and are thus left wondering why lights are out in Mulembe. In any case, the Deputy President mentions that all has been sorted with “voting proceeding smoothly” in 36 counties.
