Code of Ethics

Mulembe Nation holds itself to the following standards. These are not aspirations. They are the operating rules by which all editorial and data decisions are made, and against which our work can be judged.

On truth and accuracy

We report what we can verify. Where verification is incomplete, we say so and explain what we do and do not know. We do not publish claims we cannot source. We do not present probability as certainty.

When we are wrong, we correct the record promptly, publicly, and without euphemism. Corrections carry a timestamp and a clear explanation of what was wrong and what the correct information is. We do not silently edit published content. We do not delete articles to avoid accountability.

On independence

Editorial decisions are made by our editorial team without interference from advertisers, funders, or political actors. We do not accept payment for editorial coverage. We do not allow commercial relationships to shape what we report or how we report it.

We disclose when content is sponsored or produced in partnership with an external organisation. Paid content is clearly labelled and kept structurally separate from editorial content. See our Paid Partner Content Policy for details.

On sources

We protect the identity of sources who face genuine risk. Source protection is not negotiable. We do not reveal confidential sources even under pressure. If we cannot protect a source adequately, we tell them before they speak to us.

We identify our data sources clearly. Every index, score, and statistical claim links to its source material or methodology documentation. Where we use community-submitted data, we document the verification process and distinguish it from independently confirmed data.

On community knowledge

Traditional knowledge, linguistic material, genealogical records, and cultural heritage contributed to Mulembe Nation belongs to the communities it comes from. We do not treat community contributions as raw material for our own commercial use. Contributors retain the right to withdraw their submissions. Sensitive cultural knowledge is published only with the explicit agreement of relevant knowledge holders.

We operate in accordance with the CARE Principles for Indigenous Data Governance (Collective Benefit, Authority to Control, Responsibility, and Ethics) as published by the Global Indigenous Data Alliance.

On fairness

We cover the Great Lakes region with the understanding that it has historically been misrepresented by outside institutions. We do not reproduce those distortions. We do not flatten the diversity of the region into a single narrative. We give subjects the opportunity to respond to reporting that concerns them. We present that response fairly, even when we disagree with it.

On distinction between news, analysis, and opinion

We distinguish clearly between reporting, analysis, and opinion. Editorial positions and commentary are labelled as such. Index scores and governance assessments are analytical outputs, not news reporting, and are presented as such with full methodology documentation.

On conflicts of interest

Editorial team members disclose financial or personal interests that could affect their coverage. We do not assign coverage of organisations with whom a team member has a direct financial relationship. Where a conflict cannot be avoided, it is disclosed prominently.

On corrections and accountability

Corrections: corrections@mulembenation.co.ke
Editorial concerns: editorial@mulembenation.co.ke

We publish a quarterly accuracy report beginning Q3 2026, tracking corrections, retracted claims, and prediction accuracy across our indices.
