About Mulembe Enyanga

What does Enyanga mean?

Enyanga means “the times or age of…” in Luhya. Mulembe Enyanga covers traditional knowledge systems, cultural practices, and oral heritage of the Great Lakes region as it is today, documenting what is at risk of being lost, including agricultural knowledge, medicinal plant use, ceremonial practice, and oral history.

What traditional knowledge does Mulembe Enyanga document?

We document agricultural knowledge, medicinal plant use, ceremonial practice, oral history, proverbs, and the specific ways different Great Lakes communities have understood and are currently managing their environments as newer generations take over. All content is published following consent and credited to knowledge holders.

How is traditional knowledge governed here?

All traditional knowledge is handled in accordance with the CARE Principles for Indigenous Data Governance (Collective Benefit, Authority to Control, Responsibility, and Ethics). Communities retain authority over representation. Sensitive material is published only with the explicit agreement of relevant knowledge holders. We do not commercially license traditional knowledge without documented consent.
