East Africa’s Food Intelligence. From the Farm to the Table to the Market.
Mulembe Food covers the culinary heritage, food security, and agricultural landscape of East Africa. We publish recipes, food culture, and original reporting on the systems that feed the region: smallholder agriculture, supply chains, food security policy, and the street food economies of Nairobi, Kampala, Dar es Salaam, and Kigali.
Sade Khalai ferments things. She knows the trade routes that bring ingredients from Bungoma to Mombasa. She covers food as a way of tracking movement, economics, and the specific knowledge embedded in how communities grow, store, and share what they eat.
The Mulembe Food Systems Index
The Food Systems Index tracks food security, agricultural productivity, market access, and nutritional outcomes across East African counties and districts. We draw on KNBS data, FAO assessments, community submissions from farmers and traders, and primary reporting. The methodology is published. The index updates several times a week.
If you are a farmer, trader, nutritionist, or community food monitor with data to contribute, we want to hear from you.
