IEBC disqualifies Mike Sonko from running for Mombasa Governor

IEBC disqualifies Mike Sonko from running as Mombasa Governor. The Wiper Democratic Movement candidate for Mombasa Governor has failed the integrity test and will therefore not be cleared by the electoral body to run for office. Citing Chapter 6 of The Kenya Constitution and his impeachment from office when serving as Nairobi governor, the commission’s chair, Wafula Chebukati from a press conference at Bomas spoke on the IEBC’s stand on aspirants integrity.

Karungo Wa Thang'wa Kiambu senate seat United Democratic Alliance (UDA) Impeached/Removed from office on alleged gross misconduct, for breach of chapter six of the constitution. Karungo Wa Thang'wa was in October 2019 impeached by Kiambu County assembly for gross misconduct. He had been serving as Kiambu county government CEC for Youth Affairs and Sports.
Chitavi Antony Mkhala Mombasa County Governor United Democratic Party (UDP) Impeached/Removed from office on alleged gross misconduct, for breach of chapter six of the constitution. According to Nation NewsPlex, "Chitavi Antony Mkhala was charged at the Mombasa Chief Magistrate Anti-Corruption Court in ACC No. 2 of 2009 with three counts of abuse of office, and was convicted on three counts in a judgement delivered on 15th December, 2011. He was fined Kshs 800,000 on each count, in default to serve 3 years, sentences to run consecutively. Section 64(1) of the Anti-Corruption and Economic Crimes Act states that a person who is convicted of corruption or economic crime shall be disqualified from being elected or appointed as a public officer for ten years after the conviction. In this case, ten years have elapsed after the conviction of the Aspirant. However, the Aspirant must disclose the details of the conviction in the Self Declaration form submitted pursuant to the requirement under section 13(2) of the Leadership and Integrity Act as read together with Regulation 46 of the Election Regulations, 2012."

In disqualifying Sonko and Thang’wa, Chebukati cited Article 75(3) which states: “A person who is removed from office on contravention of Chapter 6 of the Constitution is disqualified from holding any other State or public office whether elective or appointive”
