May 2016, a man hangs on a helicopter in Bungoma. What follows in public outcry, a national debate and the man is even charged in court. Sunday 6th March 2022, two men hung on a chopper carrying Weta in Bungoma. History repeats itself, and the same questions abound.
The video shared online by The Nation shows two men hanging on a chopper said to be carrying Bungoma Senator and Ford Kenya Party Leader Moses Wetangula. In the chaotic video, both men are seen on the right hand landing skid of the chopper. One hangs completely off the skid, holding himself up by his outstretched arms. The second man appears to be crouching on the landing skids.
It’s a shocking video that brings to memory the much talked about “James Bond Wafula” of May 2016 in which a casual laborer hang on the chopper carrying the remains of slain businessman Jacob Juma.

Salee Wanjala was later charged in court for endangering his life and that of others for hanging on the plane carrying the body of the late city businessman Jacob Juma while taking off. The chopper, had landed at the Posta Grounds for public viewing of the body.
While it is said that Salee Wanjala had been drunk at the time of the incident, the reasons as to why these two men chose to copycat his dangerous antics in unknown. What we know for sure is that the lessons from the Wanjala incident are yet to find their way home.
Before we let go of you, join Mulembe Politics in asking these pertinent questions:
- Is it too much to expect that in such situations, where a vehicle, helicopter or any other means of ferrying a VIP is within reach of the general public, is it too much to expect that the vehicle, helicopter or other should be guarded at all times?
- Crowd control is paramount whenever there are large multitudes of people gathered in order to protect lives and property. Isn’t it about time we equipped those at the touch points – the village elders, nyumba kumi etc. – with skills, knowledge and resources; more so during this season of political campaigns?
