The moral and meaning of this Luhya proverb
This Luhya proverb is similar in meaning to the Swahili proverb: njia panda zilimshinda mzee fisi. Two roads were too much for old man hyena, he split in two. In African folklore, a story is told of Mr Hyena who had been invited to two different parties, at the same time. His greed made him want to go to both parties. However, the parties were at the end of two roach which split form a ‘Y’ junction (In Kiswahili this road is known as ‘njia panda’) on the road from his home. Being indecisive and greedy, Mr Hyena tried to walk on both paths and the end was tragic, as he split into two! The moral of this proverb warns against greed and indecisiveness: Do one thing at a time.
