We read the Nation NewsPlex article KCSE 2021: List of top 150 schools published Tuesday, April 26, 2022. It had a searchable table of a list of the top 150 schools in Kenya as per 2021 KCSE.
Graciously, the full data set by Nation Research that had been presented ably in the table created by Lynette Mukami was available for download.
So we thought to ourselves, what if we did try something with this dataset. This article is the result of our curiosity.
Our list ended up with 80 schools from Western in the top 150 schools in Kenya as per 2021 KCSE.
And they are not your usual household names - at least not for most people who don't come from these mulembe counties of the Lake Region, formerly known as the Nyanza province of Kenya.
The schools are located in counties part of the Lake Region Economic Block of Kenya namely: Nandi, Kericho, Migori, Kisii, Nyamira, Siaya, Kisumu, Homabay, Kakamega, Vihiga, Busia, Bungoma, Trans Nzoia

Bungoma County had 20% of top 10 schools in the Western Kenya's best 80 schools as per the 2021 KCSE. Curiously, the two schools: Friends School Kamusinga and Lugulu Girls were all that the populous county contributed to the top 80 in Western.
To us, this unusual statistic points to a huge gulf in academic standards across schools in Bungoma county. We find this especially worrying as Bungoma is the second most populous county in the Lake Region, as well as among the top five in the country. Therefore, there is the possibility that a large number of students who did their 2021 KCSE in Bungoma schools may fail to transition to university.
Where is Chesamisi? Where is Cardinal Otunga Girls Secondary, Kibabii? Where are all the other schools?
The Nyanza Counties of Nyamira (12 schools), Homabay (12 schools) and Kisii (10 schools) together, gave us 42.5% of the top 80 best schools in Western Kenya. What's more? There mean scores of these academic centers of excellence nicely hover around an average of seven to eight point something. This means that one can find nice schools for their children off the beaten paths away from the usual culprits.
