Often confused as their larger neighbors the Bukusu as a result of close cultural ties, The Tachoni – a house of mulembe known for its gallant defence of the fort of Chetambe in 1895 when resisting British rule – are a tribe of the Luhya supracommunity. The oluyias or clans of the Tachoni are: Abasioya, Abaviya,Abasangalo, Abangachi, Abatecho, Abachambai, Abamarakalu, and Abaengele. Other Tachoni clans include the Saniak that occupies Tanzania and Saniaga clan living among the Maragoli of Kenya.
