Full, deeper meaning of kutsya kusembela imiogo

This phrase is commonly used by younger, contemporary folks among the Maragoli to refer to a person who has died. The implied meaning is from the fact that cassavas grow deep into the soil and one has to dig quite a bit to get to them, much like digging a grave.

However, it should be noted that this saying presents a paradox in Maragoli culture as while cassavas are often planted in the farm field behind the house, it is not customary for Maragoli people to bury the dead in the farm or behind the house. People who are buried in either of these locations are those who have died from unnatural deaths such as suicide. They are often buried among the banana plantations, mumagomia, and it is considered a dishonorable send-off.
