In the 2022 Kakamega 7s, Kenya Rugby Union’s National Sevens Circuit makes a return to shieywe after a two year hiatus forced on by Covid-19 pandemic that saw the 2020 and 2021 editions skipped over concerns about public health and safety. First played in 1999, The National Sevens Circuit is an annual series of Rugby Sevens tournaments run by the Kenya Rugby Union (KRU). To make it a success, host rugby clubs featuring teams from across the country are an huge part for the party to go on. This hugely popular sporting event with a cult following is played over six rounds. The first legs are played in Nairobi over two consecutive weekends before the teams ‘take rugby’ to fans for the remaining legs in Kakamega, Kisumu, Nakuru and Mombasa towns. KCB Rugby are the defending champions of both Kakamega 7s and the National Sevens Circuit.
