Politics #
Peter Kalerwa Salasya the self-styled Wanga ‘trustee’ (trustee of the Nabongo Kingdom?), rose to power on the back of a down to earth, affable, happy-go-lucky public persona. To further endear himself to the Western Kenya electorate and his Wanga roots, the first time legislator has made the sugarcane sector and it’s centrality to the livelihoods of millions of farmers in western Kenya a pet project. He has been particular about the revival of Mumias Sugar Company and hit the ground running with this agenda following his election.
Political style #
Audacity is the name of his game as evident in his political journey full of audacious moves. Hon. Salasya’s began his career in politics with a humiliating loss at Egerton University, where he vied for the academics director while a freshman.
In 2017, he vied as an independent candidate for Member of Parliament Mumias East constituency, where her emerged last with jut about 270 votes. On the campaign trail he works the grassroots hard and is adept at conducting door to door campaigns. It is a strategy that came good five years later when he captured the seat, beating seasoned politicians David Omusotsi Wamatsi and Dr Ben Makhoha.
He’s political nous was evident in 2022 when he swiftly ditched ODM party for the emerging DAP-K. In hindsight, it was a smart political move as the Eugene Wamalwa led DAP-K turned out to be the foster party for Kakamega politicians decamping from Kenya Kwanza’s ANC party; an exodus that created a wave of sorts in Kakamega county politics. Moreover, Peter Kalerwa Salasya grass to grace story (he needed villagers to help him construct a mudwalled house as he didn’t have one) was propaganda too fertile for DAP-K leadership to ignore; especially given that the new party wanted its brand to endear to western Kenya voters in the shortest time possible.
Maiden Speech #
While continually gaffing by referring to Deputy Speaker Gladys Boss Shollei as “Madam Speaker Sir”, Hon. Salasya in his maiden speech to parliament remained true to his political ideals that call for a radical shift in Kenya’s politics and policies from baby sitting the old guard/elites to refocusing on the youth and rural womenfolk.
